Current ophthalmic endoscopy surgical systems consist of a multifunction microendoscope and a wheeled cart housing a central console (base unit) and a two-dimensional video monitor. The base unit provides an illumination source (usually xenon), a high-resolution video camera, interfaces for microendoscope fiberoptic cabling, and connections for video output to remote monitors. It can also incorporate a photocoagulation laser source and equipment for digital image enhancement
